Firefighter Training
Regular training happens every Tuesday night at 6:30pm to 9:00pm with occasional full day training on weekends. Specialized training is hosted at our hall, other fire halls in the RDCK Fire Service, and through online courses. All firefighters train to the professional NFPA 1010 Firefighter Level 1& 2 standards, which is recognized across North America.
Additional training opportunities includes:
- Wildland Firefighting and Structure Protection
- Emergency Vehicle Operations and Code 3 Driving
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
- Incident Command System
- Emergency Scene Management
- Live Fire training is held at the RDCK Fire Training Centre at the Selkirk College campus in Nelson
- Motor Vehicle Extrication
Medical First Responder Training
Firefighters also provide emergency medical care and treatment as licensed Emergency Medical First Responders. Firefighters receive additional training to respond to medical emergencies in cooperation with the British Columbia Emergency Health Services (BC Ambulance Service).
This training includes:
- Emergency First Responder Level III
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level “C”
- Spinal Immobilization Endorsement
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Endorsement
Kaslo Emergency Medical First Responders meet on the SECOND Tuesday of each month to review and practice their medical response skills.
Kaslo Fire also oversees a second unit responding at the north end of Kootenay Lake, the Lardeau Valley First Responders.
